Baku. 18 December. REPORT.AZ/ A total of 4,476 people lost their lives on migratory routes across the world in 2018.
Report informs citing Anadolu that, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 2,217 deaths, around half of the total fatalities occurred in the Mediterranean this year.
Every year hundreds of thousands of people in different parts of the world leave their country due to severe economic conditions, natural disasters, political persecution, violence and conflicts.
At present, citizens of Syria and citizens of South and Central America, Yemeni residents also escape from their homeland.
According to the organization, Europe has hosted 135,607 illegal migrants from the beginning of this year. Of them, 111,237 travelled by sea, while 24,370 migrated onshore. Citizens of Syria, Tunisia, Eritrea, Pakistan, Iraq, Congo, Afghanistan, Morocco and Mali mostly make for Spain, Greece and Bulgaria and struggle to stay there.
