Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita has held a telephone conversation with the Foreign Minister of the Syrian transitional government, Asaad Hassan al-Shaybani, Report informs, via Sputnik Africa.
Bourita reiterated Morocco's "support for the Syrian people and for Syria's sovereignty and the integrity of its territory". He stressed that "the two countries share common bonds," the Telquel news portal reported.
The ministers reportedly agreed to "strengthen diplomatic relations between the countries for the common interests of the two nations."
The telephone conversation between Burita and al-Shaybani was the first contact between the foreign ministers of the two countries since the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad.
In late November, armed opposition formations launched a major offensive against Syrian army positions. On December 8, they entered Damascus, Bashar al-Assad resigned as president of Syria and left the country.
On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who headed the so-called salvation government in Idlib province, announced his appointment as head of the Syrian transitional cabinet, which will last until March 1, 2025.
