Mongolia president orders to rebuild ancient capital Karakorum

Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh has ordered the restoration of the medieval capital Karakorum, Report informs referring to Russian media.

“The ancient capital of Karakorum is a historical and cultural heritage, indicating that the Mongol Empire was at that time the political and economic center of the world,” the president said after signing the decree on restoration.

Karakorum was the capital of the Mongol Empire during its heyday in 1235-1260, then it included territories from the Sea of Japan to Eastern Europe. Now on the site of the city there is a museum of the history of Karakorum, it was opened in 2011.

Previously, there were opinions about the transfer of the capital of Mongolia from Ulaanbaatar to Karakorum, but this was not reported in the presidential decree.
