French President Emmanual Macron has for the first time recognized France's responsibility for the events in Rwanda that claimed around 800,000 lives from April until June 1994, Report informs, citing RIA Novosti.
"France has played its role and bears political responsibility for what happened in Rwanda. France also has a duty: to face history and admit that it has caused suffering to the Rwandan people by allowing itself a long silence on the exam of truth ... France did not understand that by trying to avert regional conflict or a civil war, it has virtually sided with the genocidal regime," he said speaking in the Genocide Memorial Center in Gisozi.
Macron also apologized to the people of Rwanda.
Earlier Rwanda accused France of being responsible for the genocide.
