Katz: IDF preparing for long-term presence in Lebanon security zone

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been instructed to prepare for a long-term deployment in the security zone in Lebanon.

According to Report, citing Ynet, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the June 26 framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon, signed in the United States, is a historic development and a major political achievement.

"For the first time in decades, the agreement could help create a new and safer reality along the northern border and in Lebanon, strengthening the long-term security of Israeli citizens," Katz said.

He stressed, however, that a key provision of the agreement is that Israel will not redeploy or withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon, including the Beaufort Castle ridge area, until Hezbollah is fully disarmed.

"The real test will be the implementation of the agreement, and many challenges still lie ahead. The Prime Minister and I have instructed the IDF to prepare for a prolonged presence in the security zone and act accordingly to protect our soldiers and eliminate threats to the northern communities," Katz added.
