Housing policy and post-disaster recovery policy should be aligned at the local, national and international levels.
Report informs that Kathryn Moore, a representative of the International Federation of Landscape Architects, said this during a discussion held as part of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku.
According to her, affordable housing is one of the key components of disaster risk reduction.
Moore said the Recovering the Future concept proposes using post-disaster recovery as an opportunity to create safe, resilient and equitable communities.
She also stressed the need to guarantee land rights, since without legal recognition of property rights, many families are excluded from compensation and recovery programs.
In addition, Moore warned of the danger of speculative growth in land values after disasters, which often leads to affected residents being displaced to even more dangerous areas.
