Japan to launch 7 new nuclear reactors

The Japanese government will explore opportunities to develop and build new reactors as the country seeks to avoid new strains on the electricity grid and limit dependence on energy imports, said Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Report informs citing The Japan Times.

"Nuclear power and renewable energy are critical to continue the green transformation of the economy," he said.

He added that Japan will restart seven more nuclear reactors from the summer of 2023. Consequently, the number of those who will return to work after the accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant will increase to 17 out of 33.

In addition, according to Japanese media, Tokyo plans to extend the life of the reactors from the current maximum to 60 years in order to ensure a stable supply of energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Also in 2030, Japan plans to achieve the goal - the production of nuclear energy should be from 20 to 22% of the country's electricity.
