Israeli police use water cannons to disperse protesters outside parliament

Israeli police fired water cannons on Monday morning to disperse a rally protesting judicial reform outside the Knesset (parliament) building, Report informs via TASS.

Mass protests against judicial reform resumed with renewed vigor in various parts of Israel at the beginning of last week. The demonstrators express their disagreement with the policies of the Israeli government led by Netanyahu and with his proposed plan to transform the Israeli judiciary, which would limit the powers of the Supreme Court and give the executive branch the right to control the selection of judges. This plan, put forward by the Cabinet at the beginning of the year, immediately provoked fierce protests from the opposition, according to which the reform in this form would undermine the foundations of democracy.

Earlier, the Knesset adopted in the first reading the first of the laws relating to judicial reform. It limits the ability of the Supreme Court to control executive decisions. On Sunday, parliamentarians resumed debate, preparing to vote on the bill in the second and third readings. Voting is expected on Monday.
