Iraq conducts first census in 37 years

According to the general census conducted in Iraq for the first time in 37 years, the country's population stands at 45.4 million people, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani said during a special press conference, Report informs via TASS.

"Currently, 45,407,495 people live in Iraq, including residents and refugees," states the Shafaq News information portal, quoting his words. Al-Sudani noted that 50.1% of the population is male and 49.8% is female. The proportion of the dependent population under 15 years old is 36.1%, while people over 65 years old make up 3.7% of Iraq's total population, the Prime Minister indicated.

The first general census since 1987 in Iraq was conducted on November 20. According to the 1987 census results, 16.3 million people lived in Iraq, while the 1997 census, which did not include Kurdish autonomous regions, recorded a population growth to 22 million. The World Bank estimated Iraq's population in 2023 at approximately 45.5 million people.
