Hungarian FM: Achieving UN's SDGs is impossible without East-West co-op

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized that achieving the UN's sustainable development goals and environmental protection is impossible without civilized East-West cooperation, Hungarian Prime Minister’s spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs wrote on X, Report informs.

Speaking at the UN's high-level forum on sustainable development in New York, Szijjártó stated, "In a Cold War atmosphere, these goals simply cannot be achieved."

The foreign minister stressed the importance of dialogue, saying, "If the world's key political players don't talk and break diplomatic channels, we won't achieve results in crucial global issues." He noted the critical need for collaboration to protect the planet's future.

Highlighting Hungary's role, Szijjártó mentioned the Paks nuclear power plant expansion as a testament to nuclear energy's potential to produce large amounts of reliable and sustainable electricity, despite ideological attacks.

"The project involves Russian, American, German, and French cooperation, showing that reason-based international collaboration is possible," he added.

Szijjártó concluded that without such cooperation, the ambitious environmental and sustainability targets set by the UN will remain out of reach, underscoring the need for pragmatic and civilized international relations.
