Grossi: IAEA can guarantee through inspections that Iran won't develop nuclear weapons

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) can ensure, through a reliable system of inspections, that nuclear weapons will not be developed in Iran, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council convened over the escalation between Iran and Israel.

"A diplomatic solution is possible if the necessary political will exists. Elements of an agreement have been discussed, and the IAEA can guarantee through a robust system of inspections that nuclear weapons will not be developed in Iran. This could form the basis for a long-term agreement that would bring peace and prevent a nuclear crisis in the Middle East,” Grossi emphasized.

He warned that the alternative would be "a protracted conflict and an emerging threat of nuclear proliferation that, originating in the Middle East, could undermine the NPT and the global non-proliferation regime as a whole."
