Greenland MP reminds Trump that island not for sale

The comment by US President-elect Donald Trump about the crucial importance of owning and controlling Greenland is 'very disrespectful' and indicates that Trump intends to 'buy' the island, said Aaja Chemnitz, a member of the Greenlandic parliament from the Inuit Ataqatigiit party, Report informs.

"Greenland is still not for sale. I think that the words 'ownership' and 'control' from the future US president, who determines the foreign and security policy of the entire Western world, are a clear enough signal that they want to buy Greenland. And it's also disrespectful to Danish politicians to say that this decision depends on Denmark," Ritzau news agency quoted her as saying.

However, Chemnitz is not against expanding cooperation with the US. She cites the opening of a US consulate in Greenland as an example. But the island's residents don't want to become part of the US, according to the deputy.

"This decision remains with Greenland and the Greenlandic people. We have expanded self-government in Greenland. And as far as I know, no party in Greenland wants the island's residents to become American citizens," she added.

Earlier, US President-elect Donald Trump stated that Washington needs to control Greenland. During Trump's first presidential term in 2019, American media reported that he was interested in the possibility of acquiring Greenland, which is a territory within Denmark with broad autonomy rights. The kingdom's authorities refused to discuss selling Greenland then, calling the idea absurd.
