For the first time in many years, the German government has approved a large-scale export of weapons to Türkiye, amounting to approximately several hundred million euros, Report informs via Der Spiegel magazine.
The German Federal Security Council approved the supply of German weapons to Türkiye, including 100 surface-to-air missiles and torpedoes for the Turkish Navy, as well as equipment for modernizing submarines and frigates.
The list, as Der Spiegel points out, does not specifically indicate the financial volume of the deal, but the price of the short-range missile systems of the RAM (Rolling Airframe Missile) type is likely to be around 100 million euros. The Federal Security Council also approved the supply of 28 SeaHake torpedoes from the naval division of the industrial conglomerate ThyssenKrupp for 156 million euros.
In addition, according to Der Spiegel, the list includes two more arms supply deals. Various consortiums of German defense companies are allowed to provide equipment packages for modernizing Turkish U209 type submarines, with a budget of 79 million euros. Furthermore, the supply of engine parts for Turkish corvettes and frigates worth 1.9 million euros has been approved.
The total amount of issued permits is likely to be around €336 million, the publication specifies.
This number, as the magazine emphasizes, illustrates a noticeable change in the course of the German government. In recent years, Germany has sharply reduced all arms exports to Türkiye. In 2023, 17 small projects worth 1.22 million euros were approved. This trend continued in 2024.
