Germany ready to give security guarantees to Ukraine after end of war

Germany is ready to give security guarantees to Ukraine, but says that the fighting continues and no tangible breakthrough has yet been achieved, Report informs, citing German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock via UNIAN.

According to her, Germany is ready to ensure the security of Ukraine after the end of the war. “But the war is still going on - and the statements of the Russian side cannot be trusted,” she said.

“If guarantees are needed, Germany will give guarantees. We are in full solidarity with Ukraine. This also applies to peace negotiations and the continued peace order.”

On March 29, negotiations were held in Istanbul between the delegations of Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Ukraine offered to sign an international treaty on a new system of security guarantees for it. Among the guarantors, official Kyiv now sees the member countries of the UN Security Council, including Russia, the US, the UK, China, France, as well as Turkey, Germany, Canada, Italy, Poland and Israel.

The next round of Russia-Ukraine negotiations will take place online on April 1.

Meanwhile, the United States announced that they are not yet ready to talk about security guarantees for Ukraine.

The White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield said that the US is in ongoing talks with Ukraine on ways in which Washington can help Kyiv secure its sovereignty and security. But she added that there were no specific details about security guarantees that she could talk about yet.
