French New Year's celebration marred by widespread car burnings

Almost 1,000 cars were set ablaze by hooligans across France during the New Year's Eve celebrations, Report informs, citing French television channel BFMTV, which refers to the country's Ministry of the Interior.

The widespread incidents led to the <i>arrest of 420 individuals, with 310 of them being placed in custody. Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, noted that a significant portion of the incidents were related to the misuse of pyrotechnics, including launching fireworks at police officers and firefighters.

To maintain order on the streets of French cities during the New Year's Eve festivities, approximately 100,000 police and gendarmerie officers were deployed, marking an increase of about 10,000 compared to the previous year. The highest concentration of law enforcement was in Paris and its suburbs, where 10,000 officers were mobilized, mirroring the deployment in 2023.
