Former Spanish king confirms to be in UAE

Former King of Spain Juan Carlos I has been in the United Arab Emirates since August 3.

Report says, citing AA, that he told the current King Felipe VI about it.

Juan Carlos, 82, who ruled Spain from 1975 to 2014 and is known for paving the way for democracy after the Franco dictatorship, handed over the throne to his son Felipe on June 18, 2014, and on June 2, 2019, announced the end of all his official obligations to the royal family.

Since June, the former king has not been paid his € 198,945 salary due to accusations of receiving commissions on the Mecca-Medina high-speed railway project, won by a Spanish consortium in 2012 and corruption scandals in Spanish and Swiss courts.

Juan Carlos left the country on August 3 after allegations of corruption and embezzlement damaged the royal family's reputation.
