Finnish Foreign Ministry: Borders with Russia may gradually open

Checkpoints on the border between Russia and Finland will begin to open in stages if the situation with migrants normalizes, said Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, Report informs.

She noted that the situation on the eastern border is now stable, though refugees from Africa and the Middle East remain in the border zone.

Valtonen added that the situation at the border is being monitored daily. She believes that the most important thing is to react decisively to Russia’s actions. At the same time, she didn’t say what decisions the government intends to make, but it is expected that decisions on the opening hours of border posts will be made no later than December 13.

In November, the Finnish government decided to close all eight passenger crossings on the eastern border, citing mass entry of migrants from third countries to the Finnish border organized by the Russian side.
