Finland to stop gas supplies from Russia

The Finnish Government intends to suspend the imports of Russian gas, Report informs via Helsingin Sanomat.

The reason is that Gazprom has demanded the Finnish state gas company Gasum to pay for gas in rubles and is expecting a response by May 20. The Finnish Government has refused to pay in rubles.

According to official estimates, it will not be possible to replace Russian gas with the resources of the Estonian gas pipeline and LNG terminals.

However, gas accounts for only 5% of Finland's total energy consumption. Only two-thirds of the country's gas is used by industry, mainly chemicals and forestry manufacturing facilities.

At the end of March, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an order demanding the "non-friendly" countries to pay for gas in rubles, not euros.
