Finland, after joining NATO, plans to cancel the demilitarized status of the Aland Islands, Report informs referring to the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat.
Since 1856, this territory has had a demilitarized status, which is confirmed by a number of agreements. However, some Finnish politicians intend to achieve the abolition of this status.
In particular, members of the Finnish Parliament Jarno Limnell and Pekka Toveri believe that in connection with Russia's policy, the issue of the peaceful status of the islands should be reconsidered.
However, the authorities of the Aland Islands, on the contrary, want to maintain a demilitarized status.
