Expert: France's cruelty towards Kanaks - new face of French colonialism

France's cruelty towards Kanaks is a new face of French colonialism, US political scientist and expert in international relations Peter Tase told Report.

He noted that the French government is violating human rights and hindering a further economic development in the region of Caledonia.

"The economic impact coming from the turmoil and destruction of private properties is very significant and Paris appears to have risen once again as the cradle of Colonialism as they conduct constitutional interventions in New Caledonia," he said.

The political scientist noted that the protests in New Caledonia were sparked by anger among the indigenous Kanak people over constitutional reform approved in Paris that would change who is allowed to take part in elections.

"Local leaders are rightfully worried that constitutional changes will dilute the Kanak community’s vote," he said.
