The exhibition of the famous Azerbaijani batik artist Inna Kostina has ended in the museum Riga Art Nouveau Centre, Report’s Baltic bureau informs.
The event was a great success.
According to the director of the museum, Agrita Tipane, the exhibition Silk Wings of Absheron aroused great interest among residents of Riga and guests of the capital.
“The beautiful landscapes of Baku, painted by an Azerbaijani artist, take visitors of the exhibition to an oriental atmosphere, which is very interesting and unusual,” said Tipane, noting that during Kostina’s visit to Riga for the opening of the exhibition, she spoke about the cultural traditions of Azerbaijan to guests and employees of the museum.
The director of the museum called one of the most memorable works of Kostina painted batiks with the mythical Simurgh, the sacred bird of Zoroastrianism. Simurgh, like a bird-prophet, is the keeper of sacred knowledge and an instrument of fate.
Inna Kostina is an Honored Artist of Azerbaijan, a laureate of many local and international competitions, a participant in more than 250 different exhibitions. She is known as a specialist in silk painting using the batik technique.
Tipane added that the artist personally participated in the design of the exhibition.
The director of the museum also said that the famous Azerbaijani kelaghai kerchiefs, which are included in the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO, are presented at the exhibition. Kelaghai is an Azerbaijani women’s square-shaped headdress made of silk.
“Kostina told us about these beautiful scarves - part of the Azerbaijani handicraft art and about the traditions associated with them,” Tipane said.
“At the beginning of the 20th century, after the repressions in Latvia, many representatives of the Latvian intelligentsia found their new home in Baku. Perhaps we could tell about the representatives of the Latvian community of that time in our next joint project,” Tipane noted, expressing gratitude for the help in organizing the exhibition to Azerbaijan’s Ambassador in Latvia Elnur Sultanov.
