European Commissioner: Ukrainian refugees in EU total 3.3 million

Some 3.3 million Ukrainian refugees have already arrived in countries of the European Union, fleeing Russia's war against Ukraine, Report informs citing UNIAN that EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson told a press conference during her visit to Estonia.

"Now 3.3 million Ukrainians are fleeing in the European Union," Johansson said.

She also said that in Ukraine itself, the number of internally displaced persons has almost doubled, and therefore the number of refugees from Ukraine is expected to increase.

The EU Commissioner said that the largest number of Ukrainian refugees arrived in Poland - 2 million people, half of whom are children, also 600,000 - in Romania, 270,000 - in Hungary, 250,000 - in the Czech Republic, 220,000 - in Slovakia. There are already 25,000 Ukrainian refugees in Estonia.

Johansson noted that this situation is unprecedented, it cannot be compared with the situation in 2015-2016, when less than 2 million refugees arrived in the EU from around the world over these two years. "Now we see 3.3 million people in less than four weeks," she stressed, adding that this creates additional pressure on societies in the EU.
