EU to help India fight COVID outbreak

The EU has activated a Civil Protection Mechanism to provide consolidated assistance to India, which has recently seen an outbreak of coronavirus, a representative of the European Commission said at a briefing in Brussels, Report informs referring to RIA Novosti.

Given the dire sanitary situation in India, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated. India has requested medical oxygen and medicines such as Remdesivir, the representative noted.

According to the EC representative, Ireland has already offered 700 oxygen concentrators, France and Germany have also announced their intention to help.

“We are discussing assistance to India through this mechanism with other EU countries. In the coming hours and days, we expect to receive additional assistance for India,” the representative explained.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said earlier that the new wave of coronavirus infection ‘hit the country like a hurricane.’ India has the second highest number of COVID cases detected globally.
