EU preparing new sanctions against Iran for possible arms supplies to Russia

Europe is planning to sanction a list of Iranian individuals and entities within days over arms sales to Russia, Report informs referring to Politico.

Brussels has already prepared a new list of sanctions against Tehran. Diplomats hope to agree on the new package on October 19 or at least in time for the summit of EU leaders on October 20 and 21.

The new round of sanctions will hit Iranian individuals and entities, the officials and diplomats said. This comes amid reports that Russia has used Iranian drones to strike civilian targets in Ukraine and may soon receive precision-guided Iranian missiles.

One senior official said the new package was meant as a “strong signal” to Tehran, while another senior official said such individual sanctions are faster to implement than economic sanctions, which would require a new legal framework and might have little extra effect, considering Iran is already under heavy secondary economic sanctions from the US.

The new penalties would come on top of sanctions already agreed on Monday against Iran’s “morality police” for the brutal persecution and killings of women and men who are still protesting against the Ayatollah’s regime.
