The European Commission will provide Spain with €114.7 million in emergency assistance to address the situation in Ceuta following mass irregular border crossings on July 30-31.
According to Report, the European Commission said in a statement published on its website that €82.7 million will come from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF), while a further €32 million will be provided under the Border Management and Visa Instrument (BMVI).
The funding will be used to strengthen border control and security, including through thermal imaging cameras and surveillance systems, floating barriers and underwater drones, as well as additional equipment and personnel.
Part of the funding will also support facilities for screening migrants, returns in cases of irregular stay in Ceuta, and expanded reception capacity, including for unaccompanied minors.
The European Commission also coordinated additional operational support for Spain from EU agencies, including Frontex, Europol and the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA).
The decision followed a request submitted by Spain to the European Commission on August 24.
