Erdogan expects boost in relations with Iran after Pezeshkian's victory

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expects positive and intensive development of relations with Iran after Masoud Pezeshkian's victory in the presidential elections there, the Turkish leader told reporters upon his return from Germany, Report informs referring to Anadolu Agency.

"Masoud Pezeshkian is actually a Turk of Azerbaijani origin. In Tabriz he speaks Turkish, but when he comes to the Kurdish regions, he can speak Kurdish there. He also speaks Farsi well. I will contact him and congratulate him. We hope that relations between Türkiye and Iran will improve in the future. Moreover, Iran is the country with which Türkiye has the best relations in the region. Iran is also an important neighbor with which we have historical and cultural ties. I expect that in the new period bilateral relations between Türkiye and Iran will develop positively and at an accelerating pace," Erdogan noted.

On July 5, Iran held the second round of early presidential elections, appointed after the death of head of state Ebrahim Raisi. The candidate from the reformist wing, former Minister of Healthcare Masoud Pezeshkian, won with 53.6% of the votes.
