Death toll from Syria earthquake goes past 5,800 

The death toll from earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria goes past 40,000, Report informs, citing Al Jazeera.

Turkish authorities say 35,418 people have been killed in the country, while more than 5,800 people are dead in Syria, according to the UN and the Syrian government.

Ten International Organization for Migration trucks carrying humanitarian assistance have passed through the Bab al-Salam crossing into northwestern Syria from Türkiye.

The World Health Organization describes the earthquakes in Türkiye as the worst natural disaster in a century in what it characterizes as its Europe region.

More than 8,000 people have been pulled out alive from the rubble in Türkiye, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

The UN estimates that up to 5.3 million people in Syria may be homeless after the earthquakes. Nearly 900,000 people are in urgent need of hot food in Türkiye and Syria.
