The authorities of New Caledonia have preliminary estimated the damage from the unrest in the capital of the French overseas territory in the Pacific Ocean at 150 million euros, the head of the Southern Province of New Caledonia, Sonia Backes, wrote in a letter to Prime Minister of the Republic Gabriel Attal, Report informs referring to TASS.
“The initial damage <...> is estimated by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry at 150 million euros,” says the text of the letter, which Backes published on Facebook.
She called on the government of the republic to create a special fund to eliminate the consequences of the unrest.
In turn, the head of the regional branch of the Movement of the Enterprises of France (MEDEF), Mimsy Dali, said that the unrest could turn into a disaster for the region's economy. "At the moment we do not see any improvement. This is a completely unprecedented situation for New Caledonia, and on the scale of our economy it is a disaster," she said on BFM Business TV.
