CIS fears terrorists from Afghanistan may come to member countries

There are risks of transferring terrorist activity to the territory of the CIS countries, especially the states of Central Asia, Head of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Anti-Terrorism Center (ATC) Andrey Novikov told TASS, Report informs.

He noted that in addition to the Taliban, other terrorist groups operate in the territory of Afghanistan, which don’t intend to obey the Taliban or the resolutions of international structures.

“There is a possibility that, based in Afghanistan, the militants plan to realize their political goals in neighboring states, including those that are part of the CIS,” Novikov said.

He noted that counterterrorism units in the CIS were put on high alert after the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan.

“We remember well how it happened in Egypt, Libya, Syria. Without a doubt, all the sleeping cells will arm themselves. To prevent this from happening, measures are already being taken to strengthen border protection, the fight against smuggling, and the special services have begun operational work to prevent the inflow of weapons into the territory of their states,” he added.
