The Belgian anti-crisis headquarters reported a slight increase in the spread of coronavirus in the country, with more than half of the new cases attributable to the British strain, Report informs referring to RIA Novosti.
'According to our data, in the last week, more than 53 percent of infection cases were caused by the British variant,' headquarters spokesman Steven Van Gucht said at a press conference.
A week earlier, this figure was less than 40 percent.
‘The increase in new cases is recorded against the background of a decrease in the number of tests. This may indicate both a more aggressive variant of COVID and less strict adherence to measures,' added the Belgian representative.
Belgium currently detects around 2,300 new cases of coronavirus daily.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, more than 22,000 people have died in this country.
