Brazilian ex-president prohibited from contacting foreign officials

Brazil's Federal Police on Friday conducted searches at the residence of former President Jair Bolsonaro and at the headquarters of his Liberal Party.

Report informs via CNN that, according to sources, during the search, police seized an unspecified amount of US dollars in cash. Bolsonaro was ordered to wear an electronic ankle monitor and was banned from communicating with foreign officials.

Bolsonaro is on trial for allegedly conspiring to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election. If found guilty, he could face up to 40 years in prison. The former president denies all charges.

The raids came as US President Donald Trump called on his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to halt the criminal proceedings against the former president, threatening to impose steep tariffs on the country.
