Brazil flood death toll rises to 35

The number of victims of heavy rains and the floods and landslides caused by them in Petropolis (mountainous regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro) has risen to 35, Report informs citing TASS.

According to Globo TV channel, which quotes rescue services, that over 170 landslides were recorded in the city, 80 residential buildings were damaged. The authorities of the city, where more than a month's rainfall fell on Tuesday in six hours, announced the introduction of a state of emergency. 180 rescuers are engaged in search activities. State Governor Claudio Castro has been in the city since Tuesday evening to coordinate interagency efforts to deal with the aftermaths of the emergency.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently on a visit to Moscow, said on social networks that he ordered the federal center to provide assistance to those affected by the disaster, as well as to eliminate the aftermaths of bad weather, including with the involvement of the military.

Abundant precipitation in the northern, central, and southeastern parts of Brazil in the summer (from late December to late March) is seasonal and repeats annually with varying degrees of intensity.
