Biden nominates Merrick Garland for attorney general

President-elect Joe Biden has announced that he is nominating Merrick Garland, former chief judge of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, as his attorney general.

“Today, President-elect Joe Biden announced key nominations for the Department of Justice: Judge Merrick Garland, nominee for attorney general; Lisa Monaco, nominee for deputy attorney general; Vanita Gupta, nominee for associate attorney general; and Kristen Clarke, nominee for assistant attorney general for the civil rights division,” the release read.

Garland is best known for being nominated to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama. Still, Republicans refused to even consider him in the final year of the Obama presidency in 2016.

The US Attorney General heads the Department of Justice and simultaneously coordinates several intelligence agencies, including the FBI.
