Baltic, Nordic countries support Moldova’s desire to join EU

The heads of the parliaments of the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) at a briefing in Chisinau said that they support the European aspirations of Moldova, which wants to get the status of a candidate for joining the European Union, Report informs referring to RIA Novosti.

The heads of parliaments of NB8 countries are on an official visit to Chisinau.

“NB8 supports Moldova’s orientation on the European path, you have everything you need to become part of the European family. Our visit is a signal of support for your country, we want to support Moldova on its development path,” said the head of the Lithuanian Seimas, Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen at a briefing.

The head of the Estonian parliament, Juri Ratas, added that his country is ready to share with Moldova the experience of joining the European Union. Representatives of the parliaments of other countries also assured of their support, but noted that the final decision on Moldova should be made by the European Commission.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu signed an application for the republic’s accession to the European Union on March 3. European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi on April 11 in Luxembourg handed over questionnaires to the foreign ministers of Georgia and Moldova to start the procedure for joining the EU. Moldova handed over the first part of the questionnaire to the EU representative on April 22, and the second on May 12.
