Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker said current developments in Spain are a clear warning signal and that Vienna is closely monitoring the situation, Report informs, citing his post on X.
Stocker said he is in close contact with EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner, Austria's Europe Minister Claudia Bauer and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner on the matter.
"Situations like this have no place in the European Union. What is crucial now is that Spain fulfills its European responsibility and ensures that not a single illegal migrant reaches the European mainland," he said.
According to Stocker, countries that take common European asylum and migration rules seriously must not create the opposite effect through unilateral national steps.
He said the decision by Spain's Social Democratic government to grant residence permits to thousands of illegal migrants proved to be an additional incentive for illegal migration.
Stocker said Austria strongly supports the European Asylum and Migration Pact and that it must be implemented as quickly as possible to prevent similar situations from happening again.
"If the situation in Spain develops in such a way that we feel pressure on our national borders, we will do everything to protect them, including temporary closures of Schengen borders if necessary," he said.
