Assange supporters gather outside London court to demand his release

Supporters of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange have gathered outside the court that is due to issue an extradition order and are demanding his immediate release, Report informs, referring to RIA Novosti.

London's Westminster Magistrates Court is scheduled to issue an extradition order for Assange to the United States on Wednesday, where he faces 175 years in prison. The decision to issue a warrant was made on April 2, the final decision on extradition should be made by British Home Secretary Priti Patel. Assange's defense has until May 18 to appeal against the verdict.

On Wednesday morning, supporters gathered outside the courthouse, holding slogans reading "Don't extradite Assange. Journalism is not a crime", "Rest in peace British justice", and "Jail war criminals, free Assange".

The protesters demand immediate release from Belmarsh prison, where he is being held. Assange's supporters believe that after two years of litigation, his fate will again be determined by a political decision.

Amnesty International believes that if Assange is extradited to the United States, the UK will violate its international obligations to respect human rights.
