20 schoolchildren killed in DR Congo fire

Twenty schoolchildren died and several others sustained severe injuries in a fire in the city of Bukavu in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Report informs, citing Radio Okapi, which referenced preliminary data from local authorities.

The victims include students from the Ujamaa and Furaah schools.

Other students suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to medical facilities. According to eyewitnesses, several dozen schoolchildren received treatment at the city's hospitals.

The fire also engulfed several residential buildings.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
