On October 19, Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) Sahiba Gafarova met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Greece to Azerbaijan Nikolaos Piperigkos, Report informs.
During the meeting, the speaker expressed her views on the existing relations between Azerbaijan and Greece in the political, economic, and humanitarian spheres. She spoke about the legislature's role in the development of relations, noting that there are friendship groups in the parliaments of both countries.
Sahiba Gafarova briefed the ambassador on Azerbaijan's victory in the 44-day Patriotic War last year and the new situation in the region. She said that in 2020, the Azerbaijani Army, under the leadership of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, liberated the Azerbaijani lands occupied by Armenia for about 30 years and restored the territorial integrity of the country. Thus, Azerbaijan has implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on its own.
Noting that the Karabakh conflict has become history and a new stage has begun for Azerbaijan, the speaker said that Baku is restoring and rebuilding all its territories, which were utterly destroyed during the Armenian occupation and liberated during the Patriotic War. She stressed that Azerbaijan wants to ensure peace and security in the region:
"Azerbaijan is a multicultural country, open for cooperation."
Greek Ambassador to Azerbaijan Nikolaos Piperigkos thanked for the reception and congratulated Sahiba Gafarova on the 30th anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan's independence. He said that Greece attaches great importance to developing relations with Azerbaijan and stressed the importance of the participation of parliaments in this process.
The sides also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.
