Sahiba Gafarova: 'Peace agreement with Armenia will bring long-term peace to Caucasus'

"Signing a peace agreement with Armenia will bring long-term peace to the Caucasus," Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament of Azerbaijan) Sahiba Gafarova said on June 20 during a meeting with Wolfgang Sobotka, Chairman of the National Council of the Austrian Parliament, in Vienna, Report informs.

Gafarova informed the Austrian politician about the situation in Azerbaijan and the region.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis noted that the revival of the liberated lands is currently underway. Azerbaijan is restoring all the infrastructure, cities and villages destroyed during the occupation. The return of formerly internally displaced persons to return to their native lands has already begun: “However, the restoration of the liberated territories is hindered by the presence of more than 1 million mines laid by Armenia during the occupation period, and after the signing of the tripartite statement. More than three hundred of our citizens have become victims of mine explosions since the fall of 2020 to this day. Azerbaijan does not see the necessary support from the international community in the demining of these areas."

Sahiba Gafarova stressed Azerbaijan's desire for peace, noting that official Baku is committed to signing a peace agreement with Yerevan: "Armenia should stop armed provocations, and instead show political will and conclude a peace treaty, because this will bring long-term and long-awaited peace to the Caucasus."
