Sahiba Gafarova meets with UN representative

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Ghulam Isaczai, the Public Relations Department of the Azerbaijani Parliament told Report.

Welcoming the guest, the Speaker said that Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the development of relations with influential international organizations, including the United Nations. She emphasized that the organization's Baku office actively participates in various events held in the country.

Speaking about the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh problem, Gafarova noted with regret that the four UN resolutions on the dispute had not been implemented so far. Armenia does not abandon the policy of aggression, ignoring the decisions of such an influential organization as the UN. The OSCE Minsk Group activities, which have been working for 30 years to resolve the conflict, have not yielded any results. Armenia, which claims new territories, continues its provocations. It increases tensions in the region.

She stated that the Armenian armed forces fired artillery and rockets at major cities, regional centers, and Azerbaijan villages, targeting civilians and civilian objects. In connection with the situation, the Milli Majlis has addressed appeals to some countries' parliaments and influential international organizations.

According to the Speaker, Azerbaijan supports the solution of the problem within the norms of international law, based on the principle of territorial integrity of the countries. On the other hand, Armenia demonstrates to the whole world that it ignores international law every time.

Ghulam Isaczai thanked her for the cordial meeting and detailed information on the situation in the region connected with the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh and reiterated the position of his organization on the conflict. He hoped the problem would be resolved soon.

Then the guest praised Azerbaijan's initiatives in the fight against the global pandemic - COVID-19. The UN Office in Baku is in constant contact with TABIB in this regard and is preparing a joint work plan with the Azerbaijani government for the coming years.

The sides exchanged views on the prospects of cooperation between the UN and our country, ways to resolve regional conflicts, and other mutual interest issues.
