Widespread dissemination of fake news against Azerbaijan began in early 2024

Since the beginning of 2024, threats and widespread dissemination of fake news against Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev with new methods have begun, Natig Mammadli, Deputy Executive Director of the Media Development Agency, told a public discussion on "Hybrid threats against COP29" held in Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament), Report informs.

Mammadli noted that when talking about the fight against fake information, it is important to clarify subtle nuances: "Disinformation is spread mostly through social networks. The media, on the other hand, engages in manipulation by using this information. This method is more characteristic of Western media. The fragmentation method is used more against Azerbaijan. This is the presentation of news or media material divided into parts in a way that does not correspond to reality. The head of state also drew attention to this at the Shusha Global Media Forum."

Mammadli emphasized that only Azerbaijani media can accurately and fully convey the realities of Azerbaijan to the world:

"We should not expect this from any other country. On the other hand, it is necessary to legally fight against fake information, which is a type of cyber fraud."
