Azerbaijan’s termination of criminal prosecution against the Armenian football players detained at the Lachin checkpoint shows the country’s intention to sign a peace agreement with Armenia and to reintegrate the Armenian population of the Karabakh region, Pakistani analyst in the field of international relations Khalid Taimur Akram told Report.
He noted that Azerbaijan took into account the age of the accused and their sincere repentance and showed humanism, which should be highly appreciated by the international community.
“Such a step should be an example for Armenia. This is a true step of humanism, which shows the attitude towards a positive future. Such actions of Azerbaijan pave the way for peace between the countries,” said Taimur Akram.
On August 28, Armenian football players were arrested at the Lachin border checkpoint in connection with committing offensive actions against the State Flag of Azerbaijan. However, later Azerbaijan stopped the criminal prosecution in an act of humanism.
The athletes were put under administrative arrest for a period of 10 days. After the execution of the court decision, the deportation of these persons from Azerbaijan will be ensured.
