German Professor: Armenia should have withdrawn its troops from foreign territory long ago

The occupation of the territories of Azerbaijan and the creation of a fictitious "Republic" have benefitted no one, including the Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia.

German Professor Michael Hess told Report.

In his opinion, the Armenian side should have withdrawn its troops from foreign territory long ago. Today, the Professor notes, the Azerbaijani side is quite successfully liberating its lands.

Over the last 27 years, Armenia has been unwilling to comply with those UN Security Council resolutions you mention. The international community, including the Minsk group, did not have the means or the determination to enforce them. This shows that the mere existence of the resolution.

The expert called the rocket attacks on peaceful Azerbaijani cities located far beyond the combat zone shocking and unacceptable.

Besides, Hess stressed that we should not forget about the geopolitical interests of other players in the region:

For instance, a great deal depends on Russia. Russia's position in the current escalation is exciting. Although it continues to be Armenia's most important ally, Armenia's last week call for Russian help does not seem to find too enthusiastic an echo. Another critical factor is Turkey. Russia and Turkey are not only impacting on each other in the Nagorno-Karabakh question but also in Syria. All this could mean that no matter what Armenia wants to do, it might not have the full range of options for action that it hopes for at the moment.
