Chinese scientists reveal new method to treat eye

A group of researchers from Shanghai will innovate in the treatment of corneal inflammation, Report mentions, referring to Shanghai Daily.

The leading cause of keratitis (inflammation of the cornea - ed) is a simple herpes virus. The cornea of a person infected with the herpes virus becomes inflamed. As a result, keratitis of infectious origin results in vision loss.

The study's lead author, Jiaxu Hong, said modern drugs only help manage symptoms:

"Because the virus stays in the nervous system, drugs do not affect it. Even if people undergo corneal transplantation, relapses (recurrence of the disease - ed) can occur. The only cure is to split the virus genome."

According to scientific evidence, genome repair kills the virus, and no relapse happens. Besides, scientists have developed new technology to target gene therapy. Following successful experiments in mice, a series of experiments were performed using the human donor membrane. The experiments yielded positive results.
