UN: Urbanization advancing fastest in climate-vulnerable countries

Countries classified by the World Bank as fragile and conflict-affected are urbanizing faster than the rest of the world, while at the same time remaining the least resilient to climate shocks, Antonio Sampaio, Advisor to the UN Climate Security Mechanism, said during a discussion held within the framework of WUF13 in Baku, according to Report.

"As global climate change accelerates and urbanization intensifies, especially in fragile and conflict-affected areas, these regions are generally becoming the world"s fastest-growing cities. All countries classified by the World Bank as fragile and conflict-affected states - with the exception of Ukraine - have urbanization rates above the global average. At the same time, according to the Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative, these countries are extremely climate-sensitive and rank among the lowest in terms of climate resilience," he emphasized.
