Restored Shamsi Kahriz put into operation in Aghdam

The Azerbaijani office of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has handed over the restored Shamsi kahriz to the community of Mireshelli village in the Aghdam region.

It is the first canal commissioned by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) under the project "Integrated rural development for IDP communities in Azerbaijan through the rehabilitation of kahriz water supply systems" implemented by the organization.

With a water consumption of 27 liters per second, the canal will provide drinking water to 214 families, irrigation water to 75 families, and 90 hectares of arable land.

The four-year project aims to provide safe and sustainable water to more than 8,000 families by restoring 40 canals, a traditional and sustainable water supply system.

The project's overall goal is to contribute to the prevention of forced economic migration by increasing agricultural productivity and livelihoods by providing energy-free water to agrarian communities in Azerbaijan. In addition to rehabilitating canals, the project continues to adopt a community-driven approach, focusing on gender, governance, and environmental sustainability.

This project is implemented within three different but closely related approaches. These include the rehabilitation of canals and the capacity building of communities and Kankans.
