Krzysztof Maminski: Railway sector can address global challenges

The International Union of Railways (UIC) predicts a continued increase in demand for freight transportation, according to Krzysztof Mamiński, the Director General of the organization and the CEO of Polish State Railways (PKP).

According to Report, speaking at the Ministerial Roundtable on the Sustainable Digital Middle Corridor at COP29, Maminski highlighted that international freight transport will be the main driver of this growth, which, in turn, will contribute to rising emissions in the transportation sector. However, he emphasized that railways, as a low-carbon and highly efficient mode of transport, could be the answer to the global challenges of the 21st century.

Despite the potential of railways, Mamiński pointed out that the share of rail transport is currently declining. "Between 2008 and 2022, rail freight transport has decreased by 7% globally in favor of road transport," he stressed.
