Azerbaijan modernizes irrigation systems on 120,000 hectares of land

During the second day of the Baku Climate Action Week, Azad Jafarli, Head of the Apparatus at the Ministry of Agriculture, announced that modern irrigation systems have been installed on 120,000 hectares of land in Azerbaijan.

According to Report, Jafarli said that, like many nations worldwide, Azerbaijan faces substantial environmental consequences and challenges, including temperature changes, increased extreme weather events, and shifts in precipitation patterns. Jafarli emphasized that efforts are being made to prepare for the impacts of climate change and reduce emissions.

The minister only 30% of Azerbaijan's water resources are formed within the country. Approximately 12 billion cubic meters of water are consumed annually, with 7-8 billion cubic meters used for irrigation in agriculture. Azerbaijan has around 1.5 million hectares of irrigated land, while the total sown area stands at 4.78 million hectares.

Jafarov said that the government has implemented various programs to support farmers in adopting modern technologies and irrigation systems. Azerbaijani farmers can benefit from subsidies and other initiatives that encourage sustainable agricultural practices.
