Azerbaijan considers mass adoption of seismic safeguards

Seismic protection devices are rarely used in buildings in Azerbaijan, Director of the Earthquake Engineering Research Center of Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction, Azer Gasimzada, said at the Conference on Financial System Resilient Against Catastrophic Risks in Baku, Report informs.

According to Gasimzada, seismic protection devices are present only in a few recently constructed buildings, such as SOCAR Tower and Baku Tower, which are among the handful that can be enumerated.

He added that this system maintains the balance of the building during an earthquake, but those devices need to be applied on a large scale: “In particular, it is important to constantly monitor, strengthen and install seismic isolators in buildings of high importance. These issues should be taken into account both in construction norms and rules, and insurance companies should keep them in mind.”
