The bests of the year were determined based on a survey of the country's media, sports fans, and experts. AIJA is a member of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) and the European Union for Sports Press (AIPS EUROPE-UEPS) and serves as their official representative in Azerbaijan.

In 2024, Azerbaijani athletes won a record 1,718 medals at the Olympic Games, continental and world championships, and other prestigious international tournaments. This includes 666 gold, 465 silver, and 587 bronze medals. Of these, 827 were in Olympic sports, 854 in non-Olympic sports, and 37 in Paralympic sports. Azerbaijani athletes participated in 266 international competitions throughout the year.
